Albus Dumbledore

"Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."
— Albus Dumbledore

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore was the Headmaster of Hogwarts and the most celebrated wizard of his age. Defeater of the dark wizard Grindelwald and a discoverer of the twelve uses of dragon's blood, he was widely considered the only wizard Lord Voldemort ever feared. As mentor to Harry Potter, he guided the boy through the unfolding war — revealing the nature of Voldemort's immortality and laying the groundwork for his defeat — while carrying the weight of old secrets and regrets behind a famously twinkling calm.

Biography

Early life

Born in 1881, Albus was a prodigy from childhood. A family tragedy and the death of his sister, Ariana, scarred his youth and shaped the humility that defined his later years. As a young man he was briefly seduced by the grand designs of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald — a friendship he would spend a lifetime atoning for.

Career

Dumbledore became Transfiguration professor and later Headmaster of Hogwarts. In 1945 he defeated Grindelwald in a legendary duel, winning mastery of the Elder Wand. He founded and led the Order of the Phoenix across both wizarding wars and held the offices of Supreme Mugwump and Chief Warlock.

The Second Wizarding War

Recognising Harry as the key to Voldemort's defeat, Dumbledore prepared him patiently — and, foreseeing his own death from a cursed ring, arranged it with Severus Snape to spare Draco Malfoy and protect his wider plans. He died atop the Astronomy Tower in 1997, his work entrusted to those he left behind.

Physical description

Tall and thin, with flowing silver hair and a long beard he could tuck into his belt, Dumbledore had a notably crooked nose and bright blue eyes that peered over half-moon spectacles. He favoured elaborately coloured robes.

Personality and traits

Wise, witty, and endlessly patient, Dumbledore valued love and second chances above raw power. He kept his own counsel — sometimes to a fault — and never forgot that even the wisest can be undone by their desires.

Magical abilities and skills

  • Duelling. Regarded as the greatest duellist of his time; only he could match Voldemort.
  • Transfiguration and Charms. A master of both, and an inventor of original magic.
  • Alchemy. A long collaboration with Nicolas Flamel and the study of the Philosopher's Stone.
  • Legilimency. Could perceive truths others fought to hide.

Etymology

"Albus" is Latin for "white"; "Dumbledore" is an old Devon word for "bumblebee."

Trivia

  • Dumbledore's Patronus is a phoenix, matching his companion Fawkes.
  • He owned all three Deathly Hallows at different points in his life.
  • His Chocolate Frog card noted his work on alchemy and the twelve uses of dragon's blood.
