"That's chess! You've got to make some sacrifices!"
— Ron Weasley

Ronald Bilius Weasley is a pure-blood wizard and the sixth of seven children in the warm, boisterous Weasley family. Sorted into Gryffindor, he became Harry Potter's first friend and, with Hermione Granger, one third of the trio at the heart of the fight against Voldemort. Loyal, brave, and quick with a joke, Ron brought a grounded, wizard-raised perspective to the group — and an unshakeable willingness to stand beside his friends when it mattered most.

Biography

Early life

Ron grew up at The Burrow, the ramshackle, lovingly enchanted Weasley home near Ottery St Catchpole. Growing up in the shadow of five accomplished older brothers left him with a streak of insecurity that he spent years outgrowing.

Hogwarts years

Ron met Harry on the Hogwarts Express and the two were inseparable thereafter. He proved his courage early, winning a life-size game of wizard's chess to help guard the Philosopher's Stone. He was made a Gryffindor prefect and became Keeper for the house Quidditch team.

The Second Wizarding War

Ron joined the Horcrux hunt and, after a painful period of doubt, returned at its lowest point to destroy the locket Horcrux and save Harry's life. He fought at the Battle of Hogwarts, where his family stood — and grieved — among the defenders.

Physical description

Ron is tall and lanky with the Weasley family's flaming red hair, blue eyes, and a long nose, his face dusted with freckles.

Personality and traits

Ron is fiercely loyal and brave, with a self-deprecating humour that masks moments of real doubt. He can be quick to anger and slow to admit fault, but his instincts for friendship — and his hard-won confidence — make him the heart of the trio.

Magical abilities and skills

  • Strategy. A formidable wizard's chess player whose tactical sense proves decisive under pressure.
  • Quidditch. Keeper for Gryffindor, at his best when he stops second-guessing himself.
  • Loyalty under fire. Stood his ground against a broken wand, acromantulas, and his own fear time and again.

Etymology

"Ronald" comes from the Old Norse for "ruler's counsellor"; "Bilius" was a real Weasley uncle, lending the family its eccentric charm.

Trivia

  • Ron's Patronus is a Jack Russell terrier.
  • His greatest fear, revealed by a boggart, is spiders.
  • He famously declared chess victories worth "some sacrifices."
